Bluffton “Launches” New Improvements

by Ashley Smith

A much improved Oyster Factory Park and boat ramp reopened this month, just in time for the warm sunshine to stimulate boat captains out on the beautiful waters of the May River. While it’s not abnormal for boaters to be on the river any day of the year, due to our gorgeous Lowcountry climate, the launching experience is a much sweeter (and less frustrating) one now!

The park improvement project began in February and included a new boat launch with two, partitioned, boat lanes, a courtesy dock, walking ramp and observation deck. Other improvements to the park included removing trees and underbrush to gain more parking and sidewalks from the parking lot down to the water; all to the tune of roughly $880,000.

As the season of festivals and tourism kicks off, more people will be able to enjoy the park off Wharf Street in Old Town Bluffton. The well-attended Bluffton Sunset Parties begin May 20th and run through September. Other popular attractions on the May River include kayak tours, chartered boating excursions, and the May River Sandbar.

This is a huge win for residents, as it’s the main public boat ramp to the May River. The park was a flurry of activity during the 16th Annual May River Cleanup and Music on the May Festival where many residents experienced the improvements for the first time. Some residents spent the day on the water, pulled their boats out, and walked right into the Music festival to meet friends and have dinner. It doesn’t get any better than that!
