Public Comments Invited Regarding US 278 Corridor Project

The Town of Hilton Head Island will host a drop-in style public information session on Thursday, October 17, 2019, to share information that was previously provided at the official U.S. 278 Corridor Improvements project Public Information Meeting on September 19, 2019.

The October session will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Hilton Head Island Public Library, 11 Beach City Road. This session follows last month’s official open house event, where the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) unveiled six alternatives for improvements along the U.S. 278 corridor from Moss Creek Drive in Bluffton to Spanish Wells Road on Hilton Head Island. Among the options are building a new bridge to replace existing bridges across Mackay Creek and Skull Creek, reconditioning and widening the bridges, and making other roadway improvements.

If you missed the Public Information Meeting in September, you now have a second opportunity to learn about the SCDOT project alternatives for improvements, get answers to your questions and provide any feedback before the official public comment period closes. Officials from SCDOT will be at the session to explain the project and receive written comments.

Additionally, SCDOT has extended the public comment period through October 25th. You may also submit comments online at: https://www.scdot278corridor.com/public-information-meeting-2019. All comments will be used to determine the preferred alternative for the project.

If you’d like more information on this topic, you may contact Carolyn Grant, Communications Director of the Town of Hilton Head Island, by phone: 843-341-4618 or email: carolyng@hiltonheadislandsc.gov
